Writing an Effective Resume

Whether you are currently working from home or are on the hunt for a work at home position, your resume is a key tool to help you secure the job you want. If you haven’t updated your resume in a while, it can be difficult to know exactly where to start. Here are some basic tips to help you craft a resume that will help open the doors to your work at home career.

Use Keywords

Take a look at the job posting that you are applying for and incorporate some of the keywords into your resume. Many companies increasingly rely on placing resumes in a keyword-searchable database and using software to match specific terms that relate to the job they are looking to fill. More than 90% of resumes are evaluated digitally using job-specific keywords. If your resume does not use the specific language that they are looking for, it will be challenging to make it through the initial screening process. 

Your Email Matters

Generally, email will be your primary method of communication with your potential employer.  Make sure that the email address that you use reflects the overall professional demeanor that you are looking to present in your application package.  We suggest keeping the email address itself fairly neutral, and save the adorable or cutesy email handles for another account.  With an abundance of available free host options for email nowadays, setting up a separate account to manage your job search makes sense for many job seekers. 

Formatting – Keep it Simple!

Choose a basic but modern font, such as Helvetica, Arial, or Calibri. Make your resume easy on the hiring manager’s eyes by using a font size between 10 and 12 points. Many job seekers choose to use one of the many available resume templates to easily format their information and work history.  There’s no need to entirely fill up the page with text, as some empty space will keep your resume from looking too busy.    


Make sure that your resume is in impeccable condition, free of any typos or grammatical errors.
