Tips for Remote Interview Success

Posted By Community Editor, Thursday, October 26, 2017

For any position, the interview is the most important part. For those of us in the work at home world, interviews are typically conducted over the phone and/or via video chat. We know how important landing that dream WAH job is, so we’ve put together some tips to help you achieve remote interview success!

Before the interview:

Prepare, prepare, and prepare some more! Doing your homework will go a long way during your interview. Showing you are knowledgeable about the company during the interview will show the interviewer that you take your potential position seriously and are generally interested in the company.

Practice makes perfect. Ask a friend or family member to do a mock interview with you. Prepare answers to common interview questions, and ask for feedback on how to improve for the real thing.

During the interview:

Dress to impress! Even if your interview is conducted via telephone, dressing in your interview best will help you get into the zone and be confident. For video interviews, this is your chance to show your professionalism.

Minimize distractions. Make sure you are interviewing in a quiet, distraction free area. Minimize background noise and make sure any possible interruptions are kept to a minimum. For video interviews be aware of your surroundings. Make sure your space is tidy and clutter free.

Focus on the benefits to the employer. Oftentimes, companies will want to make sure that you are fit for working in an at-home environment. If you are asked why you want to work at home, focus on their benefits! Instead of telling them that you want to work at home to save money on gas, you could say that you’ve found that you are often more productive when working independently, but are also great as a part of a team. Earning your WAH Certification is also a great way to show employers you have the skills and personality fit for working at home.

End of interview/after the interview:

Ask when a decision is expected to be made. This will also give you the opportunity to ask if you can follow up at a certain time, so you aren’t left wondering if there hasn’t been a reply!

Thank the interviewer. Showing appreciation goes a long way. Make sure the interviewer knows that you appreciate their time and the opportunity to interview you. You can even stand out from the crowd by sending an additional follow-up e-mail thanking them as well!

With these tips you will land your dream WAH job in no time! For more great tips, tune in to our WAH Blog each week. If you haven’t already, join WAHspace become a part of the largest work at home community today!

Feel Good in What You Wear When Working at Home

Posted By Community Editor, Thursday, October 19, 2017

Have you noticed how recent athleisure style trends have blurred the line between clothing and comfort? This attitude towards apparel can sometimes be taken to the next level when working at home. While many people may think that they no longer should or need to dress up, and for some the thought of staying in their pajamas all day comes to mind, dressing up can be key for work at home success.

Did you know that your workplace attire and clothing choices can affect your self-perception?  A recent survey found that business casual wear can make people feel friendlier, while formal business wear can evoke a feeling of authority, trust and competence.  Dressing casually because you work from home can and will impact your work productivity in a negative way. Dressing professionally at home during your office hours indicates and signifies that you are now your “work self” and work appropriate. This can help keep you present and may lead to higher levels of engagement with your tasks. We commonly recognize this phenomenon as “dress for success!”

Dressing professionally for your home office also allows others in your home to know that you are currently working and cannot be disturbed.  Maintaining a professional perception in your home office during your work hours can help convey boundaries for those in your household to know when you are off limits to hang out or lend a hand with household tasks.

Getting to Know our WAHspace Community

Posted By Community Editor, Thursday, October 12, 2017

The WAHspace team recently conducted a survey to get to know our community a little better. We want to thank everyone who participated in helping us collect this data. The results are in!

According to the results, 60% of WAHspace members do not currently work from home. If you are included in this group, then you’ve come to the right place! Our WAH Blog is a great place to get tips and suggestions on landing your dream WAH job. Through WAH University, you can take assessments and earn your WAH Certification to stand out to potential recruiters.

We found that the largest percentage of WAHspace members (30%) want to work from home to help improve their work-life balance. When executed correctly, working from home has the potential to improve your work-life balance quite a bit. Many of you also are motivated to work at home in order to care for a family member or child. We know that there are many parents within our WAHspace community, and we know how important it is to you that your children are taken care of.

So, what is most important to our WAHspace community when it comes to a WAH job? TRAINING, TRAINING, TRAINING! Comprehensive training for a WAH position is the most important feature to over half of our WAHspace community. This demonstrates that our WAHspace members want to do their best on the job, and you can’t do that without training.

Another very important job feature for our community members is technical support. You may expect that your employer is going to help you if you run into any issues with your computer or software; however, some companies do not provide IT support for their work at home positions. Did you know that WAHspace Premier Members get FREE technical support included with their monthy membership? The peace of mind that comes along with this benefit is valuable to many workers and companies alike. WAHspace can help with a variety of issues and get you back in business in no time.

All the Basics for Your Work at Home Equipment

Posted By Community Editor, Thursday, October 5, 2017

When setting up your work at home office, you will need to evaluate the best equipment to get started.  It’s important to note that many companies that offer work at home opportunities will have specific requirements for the type of equipment you will need. It is important to make sure you have all the up to date software and programs to run your business. Virtual call center home based positions may have different requirements than a traditional in office job. We have compiled some information to consider when choosing the right equipment. Most of these things may sound straight-forward; however many at home workers don’t always realize that there are a lot of small details to take into consideration.

Your primary tool when you work at home is generally your personal computer. Some companies require you to have a desktop PC rather than a laptop PC or Apple computer. The technical specifications of the computer that employers are looking for also matter just as much. While requirements can vary somewhat, most employers are looking for their remote employees to have the following: 1Ghz-2Ghz processor, 512MB-1GB of RAM, sound card/speakers, 15-17” monitor, and virus and spyware protection and a working firewall. These companies may also be looking for their employees to have broadband internet connection.  Sometimes a land line phone service other than cell, VOIP, and cable phones is also required.

More than likely, your work at home role will require you to have a headset with a microphone to connect to your computer. We recommend noise cancelling devices, which can help eliminate any background noise and keep your conversations free of distractions. Although wireless or Bluetooth technology may seem like the more comfortable option to use, be aware that some companies may require a corded headset so you can plug it directly in to your computer. Webcams can also be an important part of staying connected, and can be used for video conferencing.  Again, always check with the company you will be working with to be sure your equipment is compatible with their software and specifications.

Staying Healthy When Working from Home

Posted By Community Editor, Thursday, September 28, 2017

Long hours and lots of sitting in a desk chair are common conundrums, whether you work at an office or at home. Many at home workers don’t realize that the convenience of the at home lifestyle can also lead to some unhealthy behaviors. Below are some workout tips, healthy lunch and snack ideas to help stay healthy and fit when you work from home.

Exercise and working out is a necessary part of balanced self-care. Some at home workers take advantage of being connected all day and serve as virtual workout buddies for one another. Since you are already communicating virtually with your coworkers while working remotely, it makes sense to utilize one another to keep you on track and motivated with exercise goals. Scheduled breaks are also an important part of your work at home routine, and we recommend that you try to get some physical activity in every time you step away from the computer.

Good health begins with fueling your body with the right foods, including healthy snacking. Some healthy snacks that also boost your energy levels include apples, nuts, berries, carrots, and hummus. Choose snacks that you won’t feel bad eating afterwards.  Dark chocolate can also be a surprisingly healthy snack, and is a great energy source, releases endorphins, and boosts immunity.

Decide in advance what you are going to eat throughout the day.  You can prepare the basics ahead of time, such as roasted vegetables, grilled or sautéed chicken, and whole grains. By doing the prep work up front, you can put together a nice healthy sandwich, salad, or even a wrap for lunch without taking too much time. Whatever decisions you make, be sure to get good nutrition without overeating so that your energy levels remain steady and you will be well fueled for the rest of the work day.

Ways to Work at Home

Posted By Community Editor, Thursday, September 21, 2017

While sitting in traffic during a daily commute to an office, you may begin to dream of the idea of working from home. It may be because of the ongoing frustration and unpredictability of commuting, gas they are using traveling back and forth, or even struggling trying to find a daycare or babysitter for their child. Transitioning from an in office job to a work at home role is possible, and WAHspace was created as a platform to connect work at home job seekers with at home opportunities.  When they finally land that first work from home job, some may struggle with the switch from an office environment to an at-home work station so WAHspace has put together some suggestions ease the transition.

Develop your own work at home routine

Just as you would for a traditional office job, be sure to set your alarm to wake up on time so that you can get dressed and ready for your work day. You can keep a healthy lifestyle by making sure that you have a nutritious morning breakfast, taking scheduled breaks, and creating your own “off switch” that signals when work is done for the day.

Create your ideal workspace at home

You must find the perfect workspace that fits with your work requirements. We suggest finding a place in your home that is quiet with a good lighting source. It is best that you do not make your workspace somewhere in your bedroom, because you do not want to sleep where you work. Make your work space an area that makes it easy for you to avoid distractions—away from the TV, couch, and bed to minimize the temptation to get off track.

Communicate and stay connected

Communication is key, whether you are communicating to stay connected to your team of colleagues, or communicating to your family members. When working from home you must communicate your schedule to your family clearly. This way your family will understand to take you seriously and know that you are tied up with work. Some people may feel that they are alone in their job because they are working remotely, but that is not the case. You still have your remote team that you can stay connected with. Encourage video conferences, communicate your team’s goals, and always be ready to respond to stay connected to your coworkers.

What the Work at Home Life Really Entails

Posted By Community Editor, Wednesday, August 30, 2017

Working from home may sound simple and easy, but many times people have not fully considered the reality of the work at home lifestyle. Working from home does NOT mean watching TV all day long while you are in your pajamas. WAHspace wants you to be prepared for what the work at home world really entails.

Many individuals assume that working from home will be easier than an office job, when in fact that’s not necessarily the case. Sure, some things are certainly simplified, such as avoiding traffic and sometimes being able to set your own work schedule. However, if you do not establish a routine then it may be a bit tough to transition into a WAH role.  Remote work demands employees to be incredibly self-motivated, as you will not have management constantly standing over you reminding you what to do and when to do it.

Working from home does not mean that you need to be lonely. You can create success when you work at home by keeping up with the communication. You will still have coworkers so again, communication is most definitely key to success. You may keep up with the communication via email, video chat, mesagging apps, and other technologies.

While working from home, you may have the opportunity to choose to work when you want, although this is not the case with all positions  Creating your own schedule allows you to have the ability to spend more time with your family while also growing professionally. Studies have shown that those who work remotely are more productive. Your own personal at home workspace allows you the freedom to design the way you would like it, and provides the privacy and quiet that is not available in a traditional office environment.

If you haven’t already, join the WAHspace community, get connected, and stay up to date with our blogs for more information on what the work at home world entails!

WAHspace Profile Tips for Success

Posted By Community Editor, Thursday, August 10, 2017

One of the most important features of your WAHspace membership is your member profile. Your profile acts as a first impression to potential employers and the way you fill it out could mean the difference between being offered a position or being passed up for consideration.

The first thing a prospective employer sees when they look at your profile is your picture. Recruiters have told us that they tend to prefer profiles with photos because it gives them a chance to become more familiar with you. If you have not done so yet, upload a headshot photo to your profile. In selecting your photo, you will want to make sure that the photo is clear, and has a high enough resolution. You will also want to be sure that the photo is work appropriate.  This is not the place for your Instagram selfies!

What is written in your profile is incredibly important. This is how a recruiter is able to get to know you personally and professionally. Make sure to use complete sentences, proper grammar, and spell check your work. Include your hobbies so recruiters will know what you are interested in. Filling in your education and work experience, what type of field(s) you have worked in, and what type of position you are looking for is incredibly important. These fields should be treated like a resume, and keywords will help you stand out. If you speak more than one language, it is VERY important for you to note this in your profile. There can be a high demand for work at home candidates who speak more than one language, and indicating that you do on your profile can push you to the top of the candidate pile.

You may think that when working at home, indicating your location may not play a large role. However, some companies have geographical requirements and are only looking for candidates within certain states, or even cities! It is very important that you indicate your location in order to avoid being passed up for a perfect opportunity. If you are a Premier Member, make sure to upload a recent version of your resume. If you are not a Premier Member, join now or upgrade today to upload your resume.

Be sure to tune in to our WAH Blog for more great tips and tools for WAH success. If you haven’t already, join the world’s largest work at home community today!

Creating Success When You Work at Home

Posted By Community Editor, Thursday, July 20, 2017

Working from home may sound pretty straightforward, but it can actually take specific qualities and skills to make it work.  The WAHspace WAH Certification is one way to demonstrate your aptitude.  Realize that when working from home, you are still doing for a professional job that is to be taken seriously. There are also some specific work at home practices that can be followed when one is looking to or already is working from home. Below are some tips on how to be a successful remote employee.

Communication is key: When working remotely, it is important to keep your communication skills strong. In the remote world, communication is important to keep the team connected and productive from anywhere in the world. You may communicate with your team via email, HipChat, Google Hangouts, Skype, or other methods.  It is best to err on the side of over communicating in a remote environment to ensure that everyone is on the same page and on task.

Self-motivation: Increase your level of motivation by creating the ideal workspace at home for yourself. Take time to create an own work environment that best suits your professional style and personality. Motivate yourself to be willing to continuously learn new things and take on new tasks. Staying motived helps ensure that you can and will stay productive throughout your work day.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help: Without having a coworker physically sitting next to your workspace, at home roles may leave you with the impression that you are required to simply figure out a solution to any question you may have on your own. That is not the case, and remember, as previously mentioned, communication is key. If you have a question or are unsure about something, inquire with one of your co-workers or management. Be comfortable enough to pick up the phone, send an email or use an online chat to directly ask the questions that you have.

Working at Home Continues to Grow

Posted By Community Editor, Thursday, July 13, 2017

All over the country, companies across a wide spectrum of industries are looking to build their businesses with the best possible human capital.  Seeking a broader talent pool, many are deciding to offer work at home opportunities and be able to recruit from a wider pool of candidates.  Companies are also realizing that flexibility and the ability to work at home is what many job seekers today demand, and the many benefits that come with the work at home business model.  Many job seekers are ready to take on working from home once they realize how beneficial it is for them as well. Offering remote opportunities is allowing businesses to adapt to changing demographics.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), more Americans are spending time working from home than ever before. The share of workers doing some or all of their work at home grew to 22% in 2016. Approximately half of the U.S. workforce holds a position that is compatible with working at home, and 40% more employers are offering work from home options than five years ago.

For companies to succeed in offering remote work, trust in on both the company and worker side is crucial. Those who work from home must have accountability and self-motivation. There is an assessment available called the WAH Certification that helps to evaluate a candidate’s basic skills set and personality fit for working from home.  Some companies are now incorporating this assessment into part of their recruiting and onboarding process.

This week, WAHspace celebrated the milestone of surpassing the 10,000 community member mark.  WAHspace members are people all across the United States and Canada who are actively looking for work at home roles or have specific interest in the work at home industry.  Many WAHspace members have earned a WAH Certification badge after successful completion of an online module that assesses basic skills and personality fit for working at home.  Members can also opt into completing a background check through WAHspace.

“We are proud to announce that the WAHspace community is now 10,000 plus members and growing every day,” said WAHspace CEO Sarah Lucas.  “People all around the country are realizing the benefit of joining WAHspace and earning their WAH Certification, or becoming a premier member to access our free technical support.”

In addition to over 10,000 community members, WAHspace has eleven companies representing nearly 50,000 workers that have successfully been designated with the WAH Certified company credential. The WAH Certified company credential is available to qualified companies that offer work at home opportunities.  Through this program, companies are able to join the WAHspace online community and connect with the pre-screened WAHspace work at home community talent pool.  Qualified companies must be in business for a minimum of two years, pay a living wage to workers, and have a generally favorable reputation in various online review forums.  WAH Certified companies are able to post an unlimited number of at-home job opportunities to the site.

“The WAH Certified credential is well on its way to becoming an industry standard for companies that offer work at home opportunities,” said WAHspace CEO, Sarah Lucas.  “As the growth in at-home work continues, we are seeing more and more companies looking to differentiate themselves in order to attract and retain both clients and talented professionals.”

In the United States, the market for work at home opportunities, while already solidly established, is growing quickly.  In the United States, almost 4 million people work from home at least half the time.

Working from Home Doesn’t Mean Working Alone

Posted By Community Editor, Friday, June 16, 2017

According to a Gallup survey, 43% of employed Americans spend some of their working hours working remotely. Some people may mistakenly think that working remotely translates into a lonely existence with isolation from your team and colleagues.  Whether you are working in a traditional office setting or working from home, staying connected to your coworkers is an important contributor to overall job satisfaction, and can be crucial to a successful work at home experience.

Organizing workers in remote teams is a common management strategy. In a recent survey, nearly 100% of work at home employees said that they worked in teams part of the time, while half of those actually said they worked with teams all of the time. Teamwork actually supports individual empowerment. As you would in a traditional setting, when working in a remote team, you develop a system that allows you to complete tasks efficiently and quickly and report back in for accountability. Your remote team can also act as a support system when challenges arise.

Communication is at the top of the list for how teams can best function, whether in an office or a remote setting. There are tools available for you to communicate with your employer and co-workers, and some online services help create the experience of being together. Basic video calls, as well as other tools available, including HipChat, Google Hangouts, join.me, Skype, and many more, all support strong team based communication practices. This helps make the challenges of geography easier to manage by bringing the team together.

While some may find it hard to work at home and stay connected, we have laid out some tips on how to feel connected when working at home. Some of these tips include encouraging video conferences, defining your team’s goals, being ready and always respond.

As the trend to work at home continues to grow, stay connected and learn more by joining the largest work at home community at www.wahspace.com.

Benefits of Working at Home for Employees

Posted By Community Editor, Thursday, June 8, 2017

Many people fall in love with the idea of working at home, envisioning rolling out of bed and starting their workday in their pajamas.  While the reality might be a bit different for some, nevertheless there are many key benefits for employees who decide to work from home.

More Flexibility—Many times as a work at home employee you have the privilege to decide to work when you want or need to. Having flexibility with your work schedule will also allow you to have a balance between work and your personal life. This can be especially important for those parents who are working from home and need that flexibility to make time for their kids. This allows you to be present for important milestones in your child’s life. You will have the ability to spend more time with family while growing professionally. With this flexibility, you are now saving money on child care, saving time while avoiding traffic, and being more environmentally friendly.

Enhance your productivity—Studies have shown that employees who work from home are more productive, happier, and less likely to quit. Because working from home is a valuable benefit, employees are motivated to work hard to demonstrate the value of this benefit to their employer. Although it may seem like there are more distractions at home, people do get more work done when they are not in an office. Two-thirds of managers say employees who work remotely increase their overall productivity.

Setting up your own workspace— The freedom to design your workspace and the privacy and quiet of working from home are not available in the traditional office environment. Working from home allows you to set up and find the perfect workspace. You have the privilege of decorating your workspace with colors and accessories that will suit your professional style and personality. Your home office can serve as a source of inspiration, motivation, and fun. A quieter atmosphere can also be key to enhancing your productivity.

If you haven’t already, join the WAHspace community to land your first or next WAH Job and take full advantage of these benefits!

How Companies Benefit from the Work at Home Model

Posted By Community Editor, Thursday, June 1, 2017

Remote work is on the rise, and more and more companies are taking advantage of the work at home model.  Nearly four million Americans regularly work from home each day, and this number is expected to grow by 63% over the next five years. With such a large percentage of our workforce taking part in the work at home model, it is important to take a closer look at the benefits for the companies that allow their teams to participate in this growing trend.

Reduced Costs: There is no denying that working from home will save companies money. Companies employing remote workers have the added benefit of saving money on overhead costs such as office space and supplies. Remote workers also tend to have a higher rate of productivity as compared to those with an in-office position, which keeps the company from losing money due to a lack of production.

Employee Retention: Employees who work at home have a greater work-life-balance, which helps them lead happier, healthier lives. If employees are happy with their work-life-balance, they will not leave a job that they are happy with. Higher retention rates saves companies both time and money, and help to build a loyal employee base.

Talent Selection: The great thing about employing remote workers is the ability choose from a wider talent pool. This opportunity allows companies to get the best person for the position, without geographic barriers. Companies have used a wide variety of tools to stay connected with remote teams and this connectivity allows for teams to be comprised of the best of the best from all around the country, or even the world.

At WAHspace, our WAH Certified Companies have a number of added benefits to save companies money, time, and give them the best candidates for their positions. For more information or to access these benefits, become a WAH Certified Company today!  Individuals interested in working at home are invited to join our community today.

Working at Home for Parents

Posted By Community Editor, Thursday, May 25, 2017

Earlier in May, we celebrated the contributions that mothers make each day all around the country. In just a few weeks, we will honor the fathers who do the same.  At WAHspace, we know that one of the biggest challenges that comes with parenting is balancing providing for your family with the need for child care that is often associated with parents going to work each day.  For some people, working at home can provide the flexibility that allows parents to adequately fulfill both roles.

Many parents choose to work from home so that they can enjoy their children’s younger years and not miss out on any important stages in their child’s life. According to a recent survey, over 90% of moms that were interviewed said that the desire for family flexibility is the number one reason they work from home.  This lifestyle can sometimes present challenges that need to be handled on the front end.

Success as a work at home parent requires planning from the start.  It is important that while you are working, you have something for your child to do or someone to watch them. If you do not have someone watch your child while you are working, then it is best to set a realistic work schedule. If your child goes to school, takes a nap at the same time throughout the day, or goes to bed early at night, recognize those windows as opportunities to get work completed. Remember that not every company provides the same kind of flexibility, so always be clear about your availability with your manager or point of contact up front.

A support system can also help ensure that you will be successful in your work at home role.  This can include family members, friends, neighbors, and paid child care providers for the unexpected events that happen in life. We also suggest that you connect with other work at home parents at WAHspace to share tips and strategies for managing the multiple priorities that parents face each day.  For more information or to join the community, visit WAHspace.com.
